Making a film without a big budget? We got you! At West America Film Company, we’ve made it happen, from To Matter, shot guerrilla-style using the stunning LA backdrop, to Red Flamingos, where we upped our budget and learned just how powerful networking can be.
Here are our real-world tips for making your film without draining your savings:
💡 1. Write to Your Resources
Look around—your locations are probably better than you think! Got a cool LA skyline? A friend’s quirky apartment? Write your script around what’s available to you.
For To Matter, we didn’t need fancy sets. We used LA as our backdrop—and it added so much character to the story.
🎬 2. Keep It Tight
More locations? More actors? More chaos (and costs). Keep it simple. Stick to a smaller cast and fewer locations, and watch your budget stretch.
🤝 3. Network Like a Pro
Connections are everything. In Red Flamingos, we bumped up the budget, but still leaned on our network. Do a little free work, trade some favors—and before you know it, you’ll be swapping services with industry pros.
It’s all about getting to know the right people. Networking and doing a bit of trade can make all the difference!
🧰 4. Borrow, Rent, and Be Resourceful
Can’t afford that fancy camera? You can rent gear for a fraction of the price! Also, ask around—friends and colleagues may have equipment you can borrow. Barter your skills, trade services, and get creative.
Don’t be afraid to rent or ask for favors. It can be much cheaper than buying new gear, and you get access to professional-quality equipment!
🍴 5. Food, Lodging, and Scheduling—Keep It Smart
Lodging and food can quickly eat up your budget. Try to shoot where you’re based to avoid those extra costs. Not only do you save on travel and accommodation, but your cast and crew can sleep in their own beds, making them more comfortable and flexible if schedules change.
It’s about being flexible. With a shoestring budget, things might shift last minute—keeping it local gives everyone the breathing room they need.
🎭 6. Let the Performances Shine
You don’t need fancy effects to tell a great story. Powerful acting, raw emotions, and real moments are what will make your film stand out.
Great performances can carry your film further than the flashiest effects. Trust your actors—they’ll bring the magic.
🖥️ 7. DIY Post-Production
Editing? Sound? Color? You can totally do it yourself—or partner with someone willing to help for a good deal. The more you can handle in-house, the more money you save.
You don’t need an expensive editor to start. Learn the basics, or find someone who's just starting out and swap services.
🎯 8. Start Before You’re “Ready”
Spoiler: You’ll never feel 100% ready. Just get started. Make something, even if it’s small. Every project teaches you something new—and that's priceless.
🗣️ From Producer Michelle Vogel:
"We’ve helped filmmakers create magic without huge budgets. It’s not about the money—it’s about the people, the passion, and the story. Start where you are, use what you’ve got, and make it happen!"
